You want to make money, right? Of course you do. Everyone wants – and needs -to make money. So you started a blog since you’ve heard it’s an easy way to make cash, but you’re not quite sure how to actually make money doing it. Or maybe you already have a blog and you’re exploring ways to monetize it.

No matter which group you’re in, making money with a blog – whether it’s a hobby blog or a business blog –is possible. It’s not a get rich quick ordeal, but if you do it right, you could make enough to support your family and more. Let’s dive in and see how you can make a profit with your blog.

Monetize with CPC or CPM Ads

One of the most common ways bloggers make money is through placing ads on their site. There are two popular types of ads:

CPC/PPC Ads: Cost per click (also called pay per click) ads are usually banners that you place in your content or sidebar. Each time a reader clicks on the ad, you are paid for that click.
CPM Ads: CPM Ads, or “cost per 1,000 impressions,” are ads that pay you a fixed amount of money based on how many people view your ad.
Perhaps the most popular network for placing these types of ads is Google AdSense. With this program, you do not need to be in direct contact with advertisers; you simply place the banner on your site, Google chooses ads relevant to your content, and your viewers click on the ads. There are countless similar programs available if you find that AdSense doesn’t work for you, such as Chitika, Infolinks, and Media.net.

Sell Private Ads

Working with advertising networks isn’t your only option when it comes to selling ads. If you end up with enough traffic, advertisers may come directly to you and ask you to place their ad on your site. You can also contact advertisers yourself. The biggest difference from the above mentioned option is that there is no middle man, which means you can set your own ad rates.

Selling private ads can come in the form of banners, buttons, or links. You can even make money writing sponsored posts where you write about or give a review of an advertiser’s product or service. Another option is to write an underwritten post or series, which is where you can write about any topic, but the advertiser pays for a “Brought to you by” mention in the content.

The ways you make money with this can vary. For instance, you might charge a one-time fee for a link within a post. If you are hosting banner ads, you might charge your partner monthly.

Bonus tip: To maximize your income, you can also choose to sell sponsorship space in your newsletters, podcasts, and videos.

Include Affiliate Links in Your Content

Affiliate marketing is also another great tool for monetizing your blog. Here is how affiliate marketing works:

An advertiser has a product she wants to sell. She agrees to give you a commission from each sale if the buyer is coming from your site.
She gives you a unique link that tracks your affiliate code. That way, she knows when a buyer used your link to make a purchase.
You include your affiliate link on your site. You can do this directly in the content or through banner ads. If a reader clicks on your unique link and buys the product you have recommended, you earn a percentage of what she purchased.
You can utilize affiliate marketing through ad networks like Amazon Associates, or you can create private partnerships with advertisers and businesses with an affiliate program.

Sell Digital Products

If you would rather not advertise other people’s products on your site, or if you are looking for another stream of income, consider selling digital products. This can include items like:

eBooks
Online courses/workshops
Images, video, or music people can use in their own content
Apps, plugins, or themes
Just remember that if you are going to choose one of these avenues that you make it relevant and useful to your readers. A lot of bloggers make the mistake of assuming they are developing a product their readers need; listen to your readers first, and then create a digital product that will meet their needs.

Use it as a Content Marketing Tool for Your Business

It is also possible to sell physical products on your blog and to make money that way. Instead of thinking of it as making money from your blog, however, think of your blog as a content marketing tool that will drive visitors to your business website.

The possibilities are practically endless when it comes to developing a business blog. You could sell hand-made products, books, manufactured products, and so much more. Or you might already have a business and decide to start a blog to convert loyal customers.

Lets say, for example, that you refurbish and resell used smartphones out of your home. You could use a blog to attract visitors to your website where you list your current phones for sale. Your blog might cover topics about DIY refurbishing. On one level, it seems counterintuitive because you want people to buy your phones, but it also helps you build a brand and gain recognition. Social media guru Jay Baer explains the concept on Copyblogger:

I was at a conference a few years ago, and this is where I first sort of started thinking about this concept, and their founder, Robert Johnson, was speaking…

He said, “Well our best customers are the people that think they can fix it themselves.”

But eventually you are going to get out of your depth either on that project on a project down the road, at which point who are you going to call? Are you going to call somebody randomly that you discovered on Google or are you going to call the guys who you just watched their logo in the corner of a 14-minute instructional video?

This concept can also be applied to services in all types of industries. For instance, if you offered electronic repair services as opposed to physical products, you could still use the same blogging concept to increase brand awareness and convert more clients.

Sell Memberships

Another option to make money is to sell memberships to exclusive corners of your website. For instance, a career blog might charge $10 per month for users to gain access to their job board. A startup business blog might sell memberships to their forums where people can get personalized advice about their business.

The key here is that your exclusive membership has to be more valuable than something your visitors can find for free somewhere else, so be sure you’re developing something of value and worth the price.

Use it to Build Your Credibility

Blogging to build credibility can lead to many money-making opportunities. For instance, let us say you start a blog in the finance industry. People start reading your content, and your blog becomes very popular. You are now a recognized figure in the finance industry.

Once you have that authority, people might approach you to co-author a book on debt management, or you could charge to speak at conferences or to run employee financial training days.

This certainly isn’t a direct form of making money blogging, but it has worked for many well-known bloggers, and it can work for you, too. If you’re looking for a direct revenue stream, popular blogs have sold for 4-7 figures (sometimes more) by selling their branding and content.

The biggest thing to keep in mind is that making money blogging is not possible by putting your site up and letting it sit there. The “if you build it, they will come” mentality doesn’t work here, so be sure you’re willing to put in the time. Most bloggers don’t see a spike of income for several months (sometimes years) after starting their blog. Before you dive too deep into blogging, remember these little bits of advice:

Create Quality Content

You are not going to make any money from your blog if people don’t read it. After all, your readers are the ones who are going to make you money, whether they’re clicking on your ads or buying your products. Always put your readers first.

Don’t Spend Your Time Exclusively on Your Blog

Developing a successful blog has a lot to do with building relationships. That can include relationships with sponsors, affiliate partners, or simply other bloggers who will direct traffic to your blog. Be sure some of your time is spent on forums and other blogs (or whatever works for you) to build these relationships and your blog.

Don’t Be Afraid to Experiment

Not all of these tips and avenues of income are going to work for you. Don’t be afraid to tweak your methods to see what works best for you and your readers.

Making money blogging can take a lot of persistence, but it can pay off in the long-run if you’re starting out from scratch. Just remember that you don’t have to use all of these money-making avenues at once. Consider what other people in your industry are doing, and start from there.

No matter when or why you started your blog, a few tweaks here and there to your blog and your attitude can change things for the better. Check out our list of seven tips to help you succeed as a blogger.

1. Find a Niche

This little bit of advice has been bouncing around the Internet since the dawn of the first successful blog. Still, a lot of newbie bloggers don’t take this advice to heart, partially because a lot of new bloggers aren’t sure what to blog about and partially because others don’t know what a niche is. Don’t worry; we’ve got you covered.

Niche is defined as, “a specialized but profitable corner of the market.”

What we really mean when we say “find your niche” is to narrow your blog’s focus. Talking about anything and everything that comes to mind is great if you’re writing for yourself, but readers may find that chaotic and difficult to follow. What readers really want is a collection of related and helpful articles on the same topic to help solve a problem or question.

Examples of niches include:

Parenting
Finance
Beauty
DIY Home Décor
Fitness
Web Design
While it’s true that there are blogs on practically every niche, the key to really being successful and hitting your target audience is to narrow your topic even further. Find a hole in the market and focus on that. This will reduce your competition while making you a go-to expert in your niche.

For example, Blogging Basics 101 started because there were tons of sites with blogging advice for intermediate and advanced bloggers, but there wasn’t a lot of good advice for novice bloggers.

Another example would be if you wanted to start a travel blog. Instead of focusing on travel in general, you might narrow your focus to a single country or city. That way, you become the number one go-to blog for people looking to visit that area.

2. Don’t Be Afraid to Self-Promote

Promoting your own project on social media or within your group of friends is intimidating for a lot of people. You don’t want to sound like you are bragging, and you definitely don’t want to come across looking like spam.

If you want to succeed, however, you have to get the word out there, and who better to do that than you? It’s all part of the marketing process, and bloggers have to learn how to use social media and blog commenting functions to market themselves.

Sometimes tooting your own horn isn’t all that bad. The key is to find a balance between self-promotion and humility. Many bloggers and social media enthusiasts suggest using 80 percent of your social comments and shares to promote other people’s works and 20 percent of it promoting your own products and services.

3. Build on What Works

Experimenting is all a part of the process, so don’t be afraid to try something new. Start a new weekly blogging series, try placing ads, or start guest posting.

Use your website statistics and commenting functions to see how readers react to these new ideas. If you’re not seeing any indication of a reaction in your stats, poll your readers to see what they think.

Testing one thing here or there isn’t likely to hurt your blogging practice. Some of these experiments can lead to a huge increase in traffic. The good news is that you can always ditch the ones that don’t work.

4. Perform an “Above the Fold” Test

Above the fold includes the content you see when you first view your blog. It’s anything that you see without scrolling.

Since you only have a few seconds to make a good first impression and help readers find what they’re looking for, you want the most important information above the fold. For instance, people should be able to tell who you are and what you do without scrolling. If it’s not evident in your blogs title, it’s worth adding a tagline. If you want to draw attention to your call-to-action, that should appear above the fold as well.

5. Make Your Blog Sticky

Sticky is a term that means you’re encouraging people to return to or stay on your blog. For example, you might link to a relevant article from your blog’s archives. You can do this within the content, or you can list additional resources at the end of each blog post. The idea is that these links point to your own content and offer readers more in-depth information on the topic or a related subject.

As you do this, people are more likely to stick around and subscribe to your blog. You can also make your blog sticky by inviting readers to subscribe to your blog or by making your RSS feed available with the click of a button.

6. Look for Ways to Extend Your Blog

To get people to stick around and keep coming back, it’s worth extending your reach outside of simple blog posts. This helps you reach more people who enjoy other forms of content and contact, and it keeps your blog from getting boring.

Examples of ways to extend your reach include:

Hanging around industry forums or social media
Sending out newsletters
Starting a podcast series
Releasing videos
7. Create Quality Content

People have been saying it for years, and the saying still holds true. Content is king.

Without well-written and engaging content, your blog isn’t going to go anywhere. Yes, your blog design and your marketing tactics are important, but they’re practically useless if you don’t have quality content. People may come because of the marketing, but they’ll stay when you deliver content they need.

Pro tip: Creating content users “need” can encompass anything from teaching them something to providing entertainment. While blogging about yourself can have its benefits, you should always be focusing on solving the readers’ problems first (whether they want a good laugh or are looking for advice). Satisfying their needs is what will drive readers to subscribe to your blog.

Congratulations! You’ve decided to join the ranks of bloggers. You’re going to love it! Before you get too far into it, though, I’d like to help you avoid some common beginning blogging mistakes. These mistakes are almost a rite of passage, but why waste that time with mistakes you can easily avoid?

1. Auto-loading music.

Please. I beg you, your readers beg you: ditch the auto-loading music! Auto-loading music is not only annoying and surprising, but it’s a bandwidth hog. It makes your blog load slowly. Do you really want to lose a reader because she couldn’t wait for your site to load? And if she waits for your site to load, will she be annoyed because she didn’t know there would be music, accidentally had her speakers on high, and a sleeping husband (or child) right beside her? I can tell you this: She won’t be back.

2. Using a design with a dark background & light text.

This issue is less about your aesthetic (though that is part of it) and more about usability and readability. Reading online is harder on our eyes than reading traditional paper. Using a dark background with light text makes it even harder on your readers’ eyes.

3. Too much sidebar clutter.

A sleek, uncluttered design goes a long way with readers. The less clutter, the more white space you have. You can use this white space to help lead your readers’ eye toward specific content. Your images and headlines will stand out more.

Are you proud of your awards, badges, and various trinkets and show them off on your sidebar? That’s OK, those things are a rite of passage too. You don’t have to get rid of them, but why not put awards on their own page and link to it from your main page? You’ll trade 20 links for just one link and de-clutter the sidebar. De-cluttering your sidebar eases navigation for your reader. When there are fewer items competing for your reader’s attention, they’ll be drawn to what’s important.

4. Accidental plagiarism (even with photos).

Very few legitimate bloggers plagiarize on purpose. Most likely a new blogger won’t realize what they’re doing (but that doesn’t make it OK). Plagiarism applies to using any content that isn’t originally yours, whether it’s words, photography, music, pictures, or anything else.

Many new bloggers will Google a picture, then save it and use it in a blog post. That’s plagiarism — even if you cite where you found the picture — because you haven’t asked the owner if you can use it.

The U.S. Copyright Office bluntly says: “Acknowledging the source of the copyrighted material does not substitute for obtaining permission.”
So take a minute to find out about and understand the issues of plagiarism and copyright. You may also want to know about Creative Commons.

What about your words being used without your permission? You can check to see if anyone has copied your content with Copyscape. And if you find that someone has used your content without your permission, click over to What to Do When Someone Steals Your Blog Post.

5. Using “click here” instead of keyword phrases for links.

Choose your link words carefully. When you are writing a post and need to insert a link, consider how you are going to write that sentence and where you will include the link. For example, which of these is more effective (potential links in bold)?

The top sentence is more effective because it has a keyword phrase that helps with SEO and is more descriptive for readers. The words “click here” or even just the word “here” linked to other files or pages are everywhere on the web. When was the last time you did a search for “click here”?

Now you have to decide what your blog will be about. Of course, you can always start a blog talking about anything and everything. However, these types of blogs aren’t often as successful.

That’s because people search the Internet for one reason only: to solve a problem. That problem may be to find entertainment, or it may be to answer a question. It could be any number of imaginable problems. But when readers are looking to solve a problem and your blog is nothing but ramblings on random topics, how is your blog going to solve their problem?

That’s why niche blogs are popular. For instance, if you want to stay up-to-date on fashion trends, you’ll follow fashion blogs because you trust that they’ll continuously solve your problem. If you want to alleviate boredom, you might hit up Buzzfeed or any number of entertainment blogs that continuously deliver a solution to your boredom.

A niche blog narrows your target audience, but it also keeps them coming back.

Choose Something You Know and Love

Experts will constantly tell you to blog about what you’re passionate about. It may sound cliche and a little unrealistic on the surface, but there’s a reason for it.

Stacey Roberts on ProBlogger says, “Something that seems present and that shines through in the blogs that I read and love is passion.”

When you blog about what you’re passionate about, several things happen:

You’re more likely to put the time and effort into your blog to make it shine.
You’re less likely to abandon your blog in the future.
You’re less likely to run out of ideas.
It shows through in your writing, and your readers can feel that. This, in turn, will lead to a larger following.
If you go the other route and choose a niche solely because you think it’s profitable, you’re bound to run into burnout and dissatisfaction. Another disadvantage of going the profitability route is that you probably don’t have as much knowledge in those subjects as you do in what you are passionate about. If you don’t know what you’re talking about, why would anyone read your blog?

How to Find Your Passion

Okay, so following your passion would be fine and dandy if you had any idea what your passion was. Just a few questions to get you started include:

What are your hobbies?
How do you spend your free time?
What is the one topic you could go on about for hours if your friends or family let you?
What types of classes did you enjoy in high school or college?
What do you enjoy reading and learning about?
If you could do one thing the rest of your life regardless of salary, what would you do?
Still not sure? Try this exercise: Start with your first instinct. Create a list of 10 separate blog post headlines/ideas. If you can’t come up with 10, then this probably isn’t the niche for you. If you do have 10 but aren’t thrilled about actually drafting the blog posts, then it’s worth considering a different industry.

If those 10 ideas sound good to you, consider writing up those blog posts on your computer before you get into developing your site. If you find it difficult to finish those first 10 posts and are already cringing at the topic, then it’s probably not right for you. The good news is that you didn’t waste time and money setting up a blog that you would only abandon later.

Do you find yourself excitingly coming up with more ideas after writing those first 10 posts? Then you could be on the right track! The good news? Now you have content to put up on your site once you’ve set up your blog.

Find a Hole in the Market

The truth is that no matter what topic you choose to write about, there is already a blog or million out there in that niche. However, not everyone has explored every nick and cranny of every niche. That’s where the profitability can come in.

For instance, Blogging Basics 101 started because there were plenty of blogs about blogging, but there was nowhere for beginners to get their answers.

You can narrow your niche in the same way by adjusting your target audience to those who rarely get attention, such as novice versus advanced individuals in your industry. Another option is to focus on a certain geographical area.

Remember, however, that there must be a need in that end of the market.

Keep in mind that you don’t have to stick with your first blog and its niche if you’re feeling burnt out. However, taking the time to explore which niche you want to start in can save you a lot of time and money in the future instead of jumping from niche to niche.

The biggest thing that will help you choose the right niche is to really think about it instead of jumping in head-first with no idea.

Finding Your Niche

What if you have many passions and no focus? What if you’re not sure how to find your niche? In Finding Your Niche Online and Succeeding In It Amandalyn advises making a list:

If you have a hard time finding your niche, then ask yourself a few questions and write down all of your answers to make a list.
What are your hobbies?
What things do you like and enjoy doing?
How do you spend your free time?
What are your favorite topics to talk about?
When you were young, what was fun for you?
What topics do you know more than most about?
Are there certain classes that you have taken extensively?
Finding your niche can be daunting at first because, truly, there are blogs in every niche. You are not going to be the first. However, if you look, you will see that there are holes to be filled. Find a need and fill that need. I started Blogging Basics 101 because there are many intermediate and advanced tech sites for bloggers, but there wasn’t a place for beginners. Blogging about blogging wasn’t my first niche, either; it evolved from my first blog (a personal blog where I certainly didn’t even consider a niche as part of my blogging plan) where I was receiving a lot of questions about how to do specific things with a blog (like crossing out words or adding things to a sidebar).

Let that last part be a lesson too: You may start out with one thing and move to another. Sometimes the best-laid plans are just a stepping stone.

Dominating Your Niche

Now you have your niche, but you want to do even more. What’s the next step? In How to Dominate Your Niche, Brian Clark suggests

What you’re looking to do is intensify the niche by doing something more, or differently (or maybe even better) than the existing players. You do this by first evaluating and understanding where the niche is currently, and position your content in a way that pushes the envelope.
You can evaluate your niche simply by being part of the community of that niche. (Is it me, or do I always come back to community in my articles?) As you read and comment at other blogs in your niche you’ll have a sense of what is being covered and what is not. You can start to fill the holes in the niche or take a new approach to an old issue.

This, I believe, is where you’ll start to position yourself to make some money from your passion. As I wrote in my article Advice for Making Money with Your Blog, if you have a product (via your blog) or are representing a business niche, it is easier to sell that product or specific niche to advertisers. Advertisers know who they want to reach and if your product or business is complementary, then they see the value of advertising with you more readily than they would if you were just a blogger without focus.

You Niche & Your Network

How does being in a particular niche translate to being part of a network (something many bloggers are doing these days)? Deb Ng cautions you to be careful. In Earning Money as a Blogger: Are You Too Nichey for Your Network? Deb writes

[S]ometimes being nichey in a network isn’t always the best career move. . .If you do want to touch upon a niche, my recommendation is that it will probably be just as profitable, if not more, to start your own niche blog. This way you can post on your own schedule and keep all the profits for yourself. Yes, it’s slower getting started, but if you rock the promotion and know what you’re doing, you’ll do well.

TypePad

TypePad is a good platform for business professionals or brand builders who don’t mind investing some money every month into their blog. That price can pay in delivering more features and a more professional-looking site. However, most people will still tell business bloggers to choose a self-hosted WordPress platform due to its large community, but TypePad does have its advantages.

Pros:

They host on their servers, but you own your blog.
Unlimited storage space.
Easy to use.
Cons:

It costs a few dollars more per month than a self-hosted WordPress site.

WIX

WIX is a good website option with blogging capabilities that is ideal for businesses. With its ecommerce functions, WIX makes building your entire ecommerce business website simple, although full control over your online shop is somewhat limited.

Unlimited bandwidth.
Ad integration.
Easy to use.
Domain registration options.
Up to 20 GB storage.
Hundreds of professional-looking templates.

Ecommerce tools aren’t very advanced.
Limited customization options.

So, you want to start a blog huh? Great idea!

But…how the heck do you get started? There’s so much info out there on the web, and everyone’s telling you to do different things. Who do you listen to? Where’s the starting point?

Damnit, maybe you should just forget it – it’s too confusing!

Well, hold up. I used to be a blogging newbie too. I had the same problems. I started my blog (BloggingBasics101.com) way back in 2006, and I knew less than nothing about blogging. In fact it was only the week before I’d learnt what a blog was.

Now I know a ton about them, and my blog’s doing pretty well – I receive more than 300,000 unique visitors per month which makes me consider myself someone you could listen to and learn from when it comes to building your own blog. I’m not some sort of Guru, but I certainly do know the basics.

I promise it’ll be simple, relatively easy, and definitely easy to understand (no stupid jargon). Sound good?

Awesome, let’s move on.

Why you should create a blog and join the blogging community

So below, I’m going to outline exactly what you need to do to get started and set up your own personal blog. Before we dive in though, I really want to talk about WHY you should build a blog.

Note: If you already have a solid idea of the whys, then skip this and go right ahead with the guide.

Blogging has quickly become one of the most popular ways of communicating and spreading information and news. There are literally millions of blogs online (don’t worry, you can make yours stand out and get noticed!).
It’s a great way to express yourself and also a fantastic way to share information with others.
You become a better person and a better writer.
The best reason? You can make money doing it!
I bet you already knew all of that, but it’s nice to be reminded.

One very last thing before we get started:

It’s nowhere near as difficult as setting up a website from scratch (there’s very little technical ability needed here). In fact, there’s no coding required by you. Good news, huh?

5 Steps on How to Start a Blog

There’s five main steps you need to go through in order to set up a blog. If you follow this guide and the five steps, you’ll have your own blog set up in 30 minutes or less.

Choose web hosting for your blog

So, we made it. Phew. Better late than never! So, without further ado, let’s jump into step 1.

Step 1 – Choose your preferred blogging platform

Choosing where you want to build blog is pretty much the first thing you have to do. I’m going to take a leap and assume you’ve heard of WordPress, and this is the platform I advocate. It’s massive.

It’s by far one of the biggest blogging platforms in the world, with countless plugins and add-ons and almost infinite ways to design and layout your blog.

There are more than 82 million active users of WordPress = a lot, basically.

There are other alternatives however, and they are listed below:

Blogger – Definitely the next best thing to WordPress.
Tumblr – Half social network, half blog. Interesting, and very simple to use.
Even though WordPress is bigger (and probably better) than those two, here are my reasons why you should still go with WordPress:

Super easy set-up and is free to use
Tons of free themes and layouts (I’m not kidding, there’s gazillions).
There’s a massive support forum in case you get stuck (you won’t, but it’s nice to have it there if you need it).
Your blog will be insanely fast and it’ll also look Functionality and form – perfect!
People can interact with you easily. Your content can be shared, commented on, and so on.

Now, Step 2 (see, we’re moving fast now!)

Step 2 – Self-hosting or a free alternative?

Whoa, slow down there! This is the biggest decision you’ll have to make before we go any further. You need to decide whether to pay for your blog or grab a free one.

WordPress, Tumblr and Blogger all offer free blogs for anyone. Awesome, right? It’s perfect for those of us who aren’t super serious about blogging. But it does have downsides:

1) You won’t be able to get your OWN domain name

On a free blog, your blog’s web address (your URL) will be butt-ugly. Like, really ugly. In short, create a free blog with any other the above free blog services and it’ll look like this:

yourblog.tumblr.com
I know, ugly right?

2) Limits and more limits

There are some limits to free blogs. You can’t fully monetize it, and you don’t have the possibility to upload all those videos and images you want to show everyone – it’s all limited. Worse still, you won’t even have access to the free themes offered by WordPress.

3) You DON’T OWN your blog

It might sound silly at first, but you don’t actually own your blog. It’s hosted on someone else’s web property and they can delete it if they want so. They have done so in the past, and keep doing it in the future. Which means all your hard work on your blog, all those countless hours of writing blog posts might be vanished within seconds. Sad…

On the other hand, with a self-hosted blog on your own domain name – you are the REAL owner of your blog. You’ll be able to name your blog whatever you want, for example “YourName.com” or “YourAwesomeBlog.com. You can end it with .com, .co.uk, .net, .org, or virtually any other web suffix. Add to that unlimited bandwidth for videos, images and content plus the free themes and you have a winning combo.

So how much is hosting and a domain name? Not as much as you’re thinking, fortunately. It usually works out to about $5 to $10 per month, depending on your hosting provider which is less than a couple of coffees.

Step 3 – Start a blog on your own domain (if you chose self-hosting and a custom domain)

I’m going to push ahead based on the premise you’ve chosen WordPress, and if you haven’t, you should. Seriously, it’s the best.

If you’re still a little confused by what a self-hosted blog is, allow me to explain and how you can go about setting one up for yourself.

You’ll need to come up with a domain name you like and also choose a hosting company that can host your blog.

Domain: The domain is basically the URL of your website. Examples: google.com (Google.com is the domain), Facebook.com (Facebook.com is the domain). See? Simple!
Hosting: Hosting is basically the company that puts your website up on the internet so everyone else can see it. Everything will be saved on there. Think of it as a computer hard-drive on the internet where your blog will be saved.
Personally, I use iPage (for my blog domain and hosting), and I’ve got nothing but good things to say about it. It’s probably one of the cheapest (less than $2.50 per month) hosting providers out there. A domain name will cost around $10-15 a year, but with iPage they throw that in for free :). Big smiles for that! They’re the providers I use for all of my blogs, including the one you’re reading right now.

If for any reason you don’t want to go with iPage, feel free to choose your own hosting company. Most, if not all of them, should have a “one-click” WordPress install solution on their admin panel.

That button will automatically install WordPress on your blog. Did I say it was simple or what?

All you need to do is sign up with iPage (or your chosen provider), choose your hosting plan and a domain name and look for the one-click WordPress install button on the admin panel.

WordPress essentials aren’t often needed, but I’d recommend whois privacy (that will keep all your personal details private) and definitely automated backups (this’ll save your website just in case anything fails or disappears, so you won’t lose any or very little of your blog).

Once WordPress is installed on your website, all you have to do to start blogging is go to your WP-Admin page usually www.yourblognamehere.com/wp-admin and start writing by adding a new post.

At the start, the layout looks confusing, but it gets very understandable quickly. Don’t worry!

Step 4 – Designing your WordPress blog

Now, the fun bit.

Let’s make your blog look exactly how you want it to. To choose a new theme, you can either head to Appearance > Themes and install a free WordPress theme or you can head to a premium theme website like ThemeForest.net and buy a theme for around $40.

I usually choose something that looks professional and pretty easy to customise. WordPress also has this awesome feature that allows you to change themes with just a few clicks. So if you start getting tired of your current blog template, you can just switch to another one without losing any precious content or images.

Remember, your blog’s design should reflect both you and your personality, but also what the blog is about. There’s no point having a football-orientated theme if your blog is about tennis, understand?

On top of that, it should be easy to navigate if you want people to stick around. If it’s tricky and difficult to move around it, people won’t stay. Design is a subjective art; meaning everyone likes different things.

But no one likes ugly websites, and they especially hate websites that need a university degree to navigate. Make it easy for them.

블로그로 돈을 벌기 전에 꼭 생각해봐야 할것이 있습니다. 바로 어떤 주제로 블로그를 운영할것인가, 어떤 분야로 블로그를 운영할것인가 입니다.

주제를 미리 생각하지 않고 마구잡이로 블로그를 만들었다가는 다시 블로그를 새로 만드는 경우가 발생합니다.

따라서 먼저 어떤 분야의 블로그를 운영할지에 대해 생각해봐야 합니다.

그럼 어떤 분야의 블로그를 운영해야 할까요? 이에 대한 대답으로 많은 분들이 수익이 가장 많은 분야를 찾고 있을겁니다. 물론 그 분야에 수익이 많이 발생하는 분야는 좋습니다. 이미 수요가 존재하고, 내 제품을 구매할 사람들이 이미 존재한다는 뜻이니깐요.

하지만 수익만 바라보고 하기에는 블로그는 그렇게 호락호락하지 않습니다. 특히 고수익을 만들기 위해서는 생각보다 더 많은 노력을 요구합니다.

많은 분들이 여기서 좌절을 합니다. 쉽게 보고 접근했다가 매일 매일 글 쓰는게 힘들어서 그만 두는 경우가 발생합니다.​ 글을 쓰는만큼 수익이 발생하진 않기 때문이죠.

​따라서 어떤 분야의 블로그를 만들지 결정하기 위해서는 아주 진부하고 당연한 말이지만 ‘열정’이 있고, ‘관심’이 있는 분야를 선택해야 합니다.

물론 이런 말은 많이 들어보셨을겁니다. 자기가 흥미있고, 관심있어 하는 분야로 시작하라는 말은 지금까지 많이 들어보셨을겁니다. 저도 블로그를 시작하기전에 그런 소리를 많이 들었던 기억이 있었습니다만 그걸 그렇게 중요하게 생각하지 않았습니다. 또 뻔한 소리하네 라고 생각했었습니다.

​근데 제가 블로그를 운영하다보니 이 말들이 마음에 와닿았습니다. 자신이 관심이 없고, 흥미가 없는 분야는 절대 지속할수 없습니다.

사실 그 누구도 고수익을 내기까지 한달이 걸릴지 1년이 걸릴지 장담할수 없습니다. 최대의 노력을 한다고 해도 말이죠. 그렇다면 언제 고수익을 낼지 알수 없는 그 곳까지 도달하기 위해 관심이 없고 흥미가 없는 분야에 대해 글을 쓰고 공부하고 연구하고 조사하고 기술적인 부분도 배워야 합니다.

​초인적인 의지가 없는 이상 중간에 분명히 슬럼프가 오고 지치기 마련인데 그때 계속 지속시킬 동기부여가 되질 않습니다. 그렇게 사이트는 방치가 되고 맙니다.

어쩔때는 수익이 나기도 전에 지쳐서 블로그 운영을 멈추는 경우도 생길때도 있습니다. 저처럼 그렇게 부지런하지 않은 사람은 특히 아예 수익이 발생하지 않는 사이트가 되버릴수 있습니다.

따라서 수익이 발생할때까지 블로그를 운영할수 있는 원동력은 바로 자기 자신의 ‘흥미’와 ‘관심’, ‘열정’입니다.

특히 열정있는 분야를 선택해서 블로그를 운영하시기 바랍니다.

제가 말씀드리는 ‘열정’이라는 뭔가 가슴이 뜨거워지고, 뭔가 가슴속에 뭔가 일어나는 그런 추상적인것만을 의미하는게 아닙니다.

제가 말씀드리는 열정은 누가 시키지 않아도 내 스스로 더 배우고 싶고, 더 공부하고 싶고, 더 알고 싶고, 더 하고 싶은 그런것입니다. 그런것에 대해 블로그를 운영하면 장기적으로 운영할수 있습니다. 물론 중간에 지쳐서 슬럼프가 와도 다시 일어설수 있습니다.

하지만 열정이 있는 분야라도 아무런 수익이 발생하지 않는 분야일수도 있습니다. 따라서 열정도 있으면서 어느정도 수익이 발생하는 분야가 최고입니다. 물론 우선순위는 수익보다 열정이 중요합니다.

저 같은 경우는 온라인 비즈니스나 자동수입원 만들기 등에 관심이 있고, 열정이 있습니다. 여러분도 열정이 있는 분야를 찾아서 블로그를 운영해보시기 바랍니다.

열정이 있는 분야라는건 누가 시키지 않아도 계속 배우고 싶은 분야입니다. 그런 분야는 누구나 하나쯤은 갖고 있습니다. 심지어 게임도 해당이 될수 있습니다. 분야는 제한하지 않아도 됩니다.

2. 수익성 있는 마켓 찾기
열정만 있다고 돈이 들어오진 않습니다. 애초에 수익성이 낮은 니치마켓은 노력에 비해 돈이 잘 안벌릴수 있습니다. 따라서 내가 선택한 분야가 수익성이 있는지 가늠해봐야 합니다.​

​네이버 광고관리도구와 구글 애드워즈 사이트에 들어가보시면 해당 키워드별로 클릭당 광고비용이 나타납니다. 이 클릭당 광고비용이 비쌀수록 그 분야의 제품 1개당 비용이 높다는 뜻입니다. 클릭당 광고비용이라는건 간단히 말해 네티즌들이 특정 광고를 1번 클릭할때마다 광고 주인이 지불해야할 비용을 의미합니다.

예를 들어 네이버 광고관리도구 페이지에 가서 보험이나 대출 관련 검색어를 검색해보시면 1번 클릭할때마다 몇만원의 비용이 소모된다는 것을 확인할수 있습니다. 그만큼 돈이 된다는 분야이기도 하지만 경쟁이 엄청나게 치열할수 있습니다.

소셜관련 플랫폼도 엄청나게 많습니다. 지금 생각나는것만 해도 링크드인, 페이스북, 트위터, 인스타그램, 핀터레스트, 구글+ 가 있습니다. 물론 이외에도 더 있구요.

또한 구글에서도 이제는 유의미한 방문자가 유입이 됩니다. 많은 사람들이 더 양질의 정보를 얻기 위해 더 자주 구글을 찾고 있습니다.

따라서 굳이 네이버 블로그에만 의존할 필요가 없게 되었습니다. 그리고 네이버 블로그는 광고대행사들의 경쟁이 엄청나게 치열해 일반 사람들의 블로그 글이 저 아래로 묻혀서 안보이는 일은 부지기수입니다.

티스토리의 경우 구글 검색, 다음, 네이버 모두 검색이 될수 있습니다만 워드프레스처럼 확장성이 떨어집니다. 디자인의 틀이 모두 비슷비슷하기 때문에 차별화를 주기가 힘듭니다.

차별화를 주기 힘들다는 말은 내 블로그가 점점 커지면서 그 블로그 자체가 브랜딩화되는데 씨너지 효과를 주지 못할 확률이 높다는 뜻입니다.

그래도 찾아보니 요즘에는 티스토리로도 나름 멋진 디자인을 만들수 있네요.

어플이나 플러그인, 테마를 만들어서 돈을 버는 사람도 있습니다. 어플시장은 전체적으로 포화상태이긴 하지만 어디든지 틈새시장은 있을거라 생각합니다. 참고로 Themeforest는 워드프레스 플러그인과 테마를 판매할수 있는 오픈마켓입니다.

오디오나 비디오를 판매해서 수익을 만들수 있습니다. 해외에는 istockphoto와 audiojungle이라는 곳에서 오디오와 비디오를 판매할수 있습니다.

1-5 웨비나
웨비나는 간단히 말해 웹에서 세미나를 여는 것입니다. 제가 화면을 통해 세미나를 진행하고 다른 사람들은 각자 집이나 사무실에서 해드셋을 끼고 제 강의를 듣는 방식입니다.

세미나를 진행해본적이 있는 분이라면 웨비나도 도전해보시기 바랍니다. 웨비나의 가장 큰 장점은 지방에 있는 분들도 손쉽게 세미나를 들을수 있다는 점입니다. 웨비나의 단점이라면 실제로 움직이면서 보여줘야 하는 강의는 카메라맨이 따로 있어야 합니다.

아무 경험도 없는 사람이 소프트웨어를 만들기는 현실적으로 힘듭니다. 어느정도 자본이 있거나, 기술력이 이미 갖춰져있는 상태가 아니라면 힘듭니다.

제휴마케팅은 가장 쉬운 비즈니스 모델입니다. 쉽게 말해 남의 상품을 내가 대신 팔아주고 팔릴때마다 일정 비율의 수익을 얻는 방법입니다. 대신 팔아주는 역할을 하는게 바로 제휴마케터입니다.

좀 더 자세하게 설명하면 ​내 홈페이지에서 방문자가 남의 상품을 홍보하는 페이지의 링크를 클릭해서 제품을 구매를 하면, 나에게 일정 비율의 수익이 발생하는 구조입니다.

쉽게 말해 google.com 이런 링크가 제 홈페이지에 있다고 가정해봅시다. 이 링크를 방문자가 클릭해서 제품을 구매하면 나에게 일정 비율의 수익을 제품 판매자가 줍니다.

​이런 제휴마케팅에는 CPA와 CPS가 있는데 지금은 모르셔도 상관 없습니다. 제휴마케팅이 남의 제품을 대신 판매만 해주는 거구나 라고 이해만 하시면 됩니다.

제휴마케팅 – CPA
CPA는 Cost per Action이라고 불리우는데요. 액션은 ‘행동’입니다. 따라서 어떤 행동을 할때마다 비용이 지불되는 방식인데요. 여기서 행동의 범위는 보통 ‘회원가입’이나 ‘상담신청’을 의미합니다. 여기서 말하는 행동은 구매가 아닙니다.

회원가입이나 상담신청을 하기만 해도 나에게 일정 수익이 발생합니다. 그러면 의문이 드는게 어떻게 구매도 하지 않았는데 나에게 돈을 줄까? 의아해하시는 분들이 계실텐데요.​

​보험이나 대출, 개인회생 등 단가가 엄청나게 높은 분야는 상담신청만 여러개 쌓여도 그중에 거래가 한건만 성사가 되면 본전을 뽑고도 남기 때문에 제휴마케터에게 고수익을 줄수가 있는 것이죠.

대표적인 CPA 중개 사이트로는 ​리더스CPA와 디비디비딥, 마케통 등이 있습니다.

제휴마케팅 – CPS
CPS를 풀어보면 Cost Per Sale입니다. 남의 제품을 내가 대신 팔아줄때마다 수익이 발생하는 모델입니다. 이 모델은 CPA와는 달리 방문자가 내 사이트에 있는 ‘제품 페이지 링크’를 클릭해서 ‘구매’까지 완료해야 나에게 수익이 발생합니다.

따라서 CPS가 CPA보다 훨씬 어렵습니다. CPS는 구매를 발생시켜야 하고, CPA는 회원가입이나 상담신청만 하게끔 유도하면 되기 때문이죠.​ 그래서 처음 시작하는 분들은 보통 CPA로 시작해 점점 고수가 되가면서 CPS를 시도해보는게 일반적인 모습입니다.

애드센스 – CPC
CPC는 Cost per Click입니다. 이 모델은 클릭하기만 해도 나에게 돈이 들어옵니다. 하지만 수익은 아주 낮습니다. 예를 들어 내 홈페이지에 어떤 사람이 방문해서 홈페이지 안에 이미지로 된 광고를 클릭하기만 하면 나에게 수익이 발생합니다.

클릭한뒤에 구매를 하지 않아도, 상담신청을 하지 않아도 수익이 발생합니다. CPA나 CPS보다 훨씬 쉽습니다. 하지만 단점은 클릭당 수익이 그렇게 높지가 않습니다.​

고수익 블로거들의 공통점은?
해외의 고수익을 만드는 블로거들은 하나의 수입원에 의존하지 않습니다. 월 1000만원 이상 버는 대부분의 블로거들은​ 전자책과 온라인 코스,1:1 코칭, 웨비나, 세미나, 컨설팅, 프리랜싱, 애드센스, 파트너쉽 광고, 제휴마케팅 등 여러 수입원을 활용해 수익을 만들고 있습니다.

마케팅에서 디지털을 빼놓고는 이야기할 수 없는 시대가 됐다. 페이스북을 통해 기업의 메시지를 전파하고, 신제품을 소개하고, 각종 이벤트를 여는 등 소셜미디어는 디지털 마케팅에서 가장 중요한 플랫폼으로 여겨진다.

하지만 간과하기 쉬운 디지털 플랫폼이 하나 있다. 가장 오래된 온라인 커뮤니케이션 도구 말이다. 바로 이메일. 대중이 이메일을 적극적으로 사용하게 된 건 1996년 미국의 핫메일(hotmail.com) 서비스가 시작된 후이며, 한국에선 1997년 한메일(hanmail.net) 이후다.

그럼 이렇게 오래된 이메일이 디지털 마케팅에서 여전히 필요할까? 우리는 이제 페이스북으로 매일 소식을 전하고, 카카오톡과 같은 메신저로 소통한다. 그런데도 이메일을 통해 마케팅 하는 것은 유효할까?

유효하다. 아니 유효한 걸 넘어 디지털 마케팅에 있어 매우 효과적인 채널이다.

1. 누구나 이메일 주소는 가지고 있다
왜 마케터들은 페이스북 마케팅을 할까? 데이터 측정이 용이해서? 효과가 좋아서? 이런 이유도 있지만 가장 중요한 이유는 많은 사람이 페이스북을 사용하고 있기 때문이다. 소위 타깃 청중에게 자사의 메시지를 도달시키기 위해선 많은 사용자수를 보유하고 있는 곳에 켐페인을 집행하는 것이 효율적이기 때문이다.

이메일도 마찬가지다. 이메일 계정이 없는 사람을 찾기가 오히려 어렵다. 회사를 다니면 회사 이메일 계정이 생겨 개인이 2-3개의 메일 계정을 가지고 있는 모습이 흔하다. 이미 가장 많이 쓰이는 이메일 서비스 중 하나인 지메일은 사용자수가 10억명을 돌파했다.

사용자수가 많다는 것은 그곳에 많은 수의 잠재고객이 있다는 것을 뜻한다. 그리고 이메일 사용자 수는 페이스북 사용자 수보다 월등히 많다.

2. 비싸지 않다
마케팅에는 돈이 든다. 그리고 더 많은 잠재 고객에게 도달하기 위해서는 더 많은 비용이 필요하다. 불특정 다수를 공략하는 매스미디어(TV, 라디오, 신문 등)를 활용할 경우 초기비용이 월등히 높다.

좁은 범위로 타깃팅이 가능한 페이스북 등 소셜미디어를 활용할 경우, 초기비용은 이메일 마케팅과 비슷하지만 더 많은 사용자에게 메시지를 퍼뜨리기 위해서 결국 페이스북 내에 있는 광고상품을 활용해야만 한다. 그리고 광고를 집행할수록 유기적 도달은 줄어드는 역효과가 발생해, 계속해서 광고집행 비용을 늘리는 악순환이 벌어지기도 한다.

반면 이메일은 더 많은 사람들에게 이메일을 배포한다고 비용이 기하급수적으로 늘어나지 않는다. 배포하는 이메일 계정 수만큼 정비례해서 늘어나며, 직접 이메일 발송 시스템을 구축한다면 그 비용을 더 절감할 수 있다.

3. 충성도가 높다
보통 이메일 마케팅은 고객의 동의하에 이뤄진다. 그리고 누구나 쉽게 찾을 수 있는 구독해지 버튼이 보통 이메일 하단부에 존재한다. 즉, 해당 기업/조직에 관심있는 사람들만이 꾸준히 기업의 이메일 마케팅, 즉 뉴스레터를 구독한다.

다시 말해, 다른 채널에 비해 충성도가 높은 고객들이 이메일을 받아보며, 이는 더 높은 전환율로 이어진다.

4. 측정이 가능하다. 그것도 매우 정확하게
디지털 마케팅이 전통 마케팅에 비해 갖는 가장 큰 장점은 측정이 쉽고 정확하다는 점이다. 측정한 데이터를 토대로 향후 마케팅 켐페인을 개선, 발전시켜나갈 수 있다.

이메일 마케팅 또한 매우 정확한 데이터 측정이 가능하다. 수신인이 해당 이메일을 열어봤는지를 측정하는 개봉률부터 어떤 링크를 가장 많이 클릭했는지, 어느 지역에서 개봉을 했는지, 언제 열어봤는지, 나아가 어떤 링크를 클릭해 구매까지는 얼마나 이뤄졌는지(전환율, Conversion Rate)까지도 알 수 있다.

그렇다면 효율적인 이메일 마케팅을 어떻게 더 효율적으로 수행할 수 있을까?

1. 많다고 좋은 것이 아니다
기업에서 보내는 마케팅 이메일을 받아보면, 종종 많은 양의 글씨와 이미지로 빽빽하게 가득찬 경우를 볼 수 있다. 보통 이런 경우 고객은 내용을 다 보지도 않으며, 보내면 보낼 수록 개봉하지도 않게 되고, 결국 구독해지까지 이르게 된다.

아무리 좋은 내용이여도 수신자의 관심을 끌지 못하면 큰 효과를 내지 못한다. 오히려 눈길을 사로잡는 이미지 몇개와 짧은 문구, 그리고 외부 블로그나 웹사이트로 유도할 수 있는 링크를 삽입하는 것이 효과적이다.

2. 모바일을 고려하라
이미 다수는 사무실에 앉아 이메일을 확인하지 않는다. 스마트폰의 작은 화면으로 이메일을 확인하고, 이메일을 작성한다.
